Check out my YouTube video tutorial where I cover everything. It's a fantastic complement to any written pattern. You're welcome to leave feedback in the video comments.

Recommended Materials

In this tutorial, I use LionBrand Cotton24/7 cotton yarn. I find that the texture stands out more with cotton yarn, and its bright colors are beneficial during tutorials. For this yarn I use a 4mm/G-6 crochet hook.

However, if you're new to crocheting and just practicing, I highly recommend using any solid colour acrylic yarn that works with a 5mm/H-8 hook size.

Directions

  • To begin the Waffle Stitch, always start with a foundation chain that is a multiple of 3, plus 2.

Starting chain stitches in orange yarn on a crochet hook, ready for the waffle stitch foundation row.
  • ROW 1 - Create a double crochet (DC) in the third chain from the hook (refer to this link for a tutorial on how to crochet a Double Crochet). Continue to make a DC in each chain until you reach the end of the row. Chain 2 and turn.

  • ROW 2 - Ch 2 COUNTS as a first stitch for the row. Begin with a Front Post Double Crochet around the second DC from the prior row (YO and insert the hook from the front around the post, positioning the post in front of your hook, then YO and draw up a loop, and complete the stitch as a Double Crochet).

  • Next, create another FPDC in the following stitch.

  • Then, make a standard DC in the next stitch.

  • Continue this pattern to the end of the row: *FPDC, FPDC, DC*. The final stitch will be a regular DC. Chain 2 and turn.

  • ROW 3 - For the third row, reverse the pattern. Work a regular double crochet (DC) into the next two stitches, followed by a front post double crochet (FPDC) into the next stitch. Continue the sequence *DC, DC, FPDC* until you reach the end of the row.

  • Make around your last stitch Front Post DC. Then ch 2 (counts as a first stitch for the next row) and turn.
