commended Materials

In this tutorial, I use LionBrand Cotton24/7 cotton yarn. I find that the texture stands out more with cotton yarn, and its bright colors are beneficial during tutorials. For this yarn I use a 4mm/G-6 crochet hook.

However, if you're new to crocheting and just practicing, I highly recommend using any solid color acrylic yarn that works with a 5mm/H-8 hook size.

Directions

Step 1 of crocheting the Rice Stitch: First row of double crochet stitches with a blue crochet hook on a white background.
  • ROW 2 - Your ch 2 counts as a first st for your next row. Begin with a Front Post Double Crochet by yarn over and inserting the hook around the second stitch of the previous row (from front to back around the post) so that the stitch is positioned in front of your hook. Next, yarn over and complete the stitch as a double crochet.

  • Your upcoming stitch will be a Back Post Double Crochet. Yarn over and insert the hook from the back of the project around the next stitch from the previous row, positioning the post behind the hook. Yarn over and finish the stitch like a double crochet.

  • Continue alternating Front Post and Back Post double crochet stitches, ending with a regular double crochet stitch. Chain 2 (this counts as the first stitch of the next row) and turn.

  • ROW 3 - Because the number of stitches is odd, each row always begins with a Front Post Double Crochet. Essentially, this stitch is the opposite of what you see; when you turn your FPDC, it appears like a BPDC, and vice versa.
