Before we get into the actual pattern, I also created the Ultimate Crochet Hack Sheet! It's 2 pages with basic crochet abbreviations and symbols, hook sizes in US and UK versions, all the yarn types (with recommended hooks and projects), etc. Feel free to click on the pic or a link to my shop where you can find more details.
Video Tutorial
Check out my YouTube video tutorial where I cover everything. It's a fantastic complement to any written pattern. You're welcome to leave feedback in the video comments.
Recommended Materials
In this tutorial, I use LionBrand Cotton24/7 cotton yarn. I find that the texture stands out more with cotton yarn, and its bright colors are beneficial during tutorials. For this yarn I use a 4mm/G-6 crochet hook.
However, if you're new to crocheting and just practicing, I highly recommend using any solid color acrylic yarn that works with a 5mm/H-8 hook size.
Below is the crochet chart for the Moss Stitch. It's an excellent method for learning to read crochet charts, and understanding written instructions can sometimes be beneficial.
Directions
For the Moss Stitch you always start with even number of FCH
Make SC into the 4th ch from the hook (SC = insert the hook into the 4tch ch, YO, pull up a loop (you have 2 loops on your hook), YO and pull up a loop through 2 loops). With 3 skipped chains you created a ch sp as a st.
Then ch 1, skip the next ch and make your SC into the next ch (into the second one from the last SC). This is what you repeat until the end of the row (SC, ch sp, SC....)
At the end of the row you should have 2 ch left so you can make your SC into the last ch (pic 1), then ch 2 and turn the project (pic 2).
Make your first SC into the first ch sp from the previous row (with the ch2 you created a ch sp). Then ch 1 (skip the next stitch) and SC into the next ch sp. Repeat Ch 1 (skip the SC from previous row), SC into the ch sp. Arrows indicate where to make your SC.
At the end of the row your last SC will be in the last ch sp created at the beginning of the first row with skipped ch 3 (next rows the last ch spaces are created with ch 2 when turning the project). Then ch 2 (creating the ch sp) and turn the project.
You start next row with SC into the first ch sp. Then you keep alternating ch 1 (you skip the st from previous row) and SC into ch spaces. Your last SC is into the last ch sp. Ch 2. Turn the project and repeat this row for the entire pattern.
