Recommended Materials
In this tutorial, I use LionBrand Cotton24/7 cotton yarn. I find that the texture stands out more with cotton yarn, and its bright colors are beneficial during tutorials. For this yarn I use a 4mm/G-6 crochet hook.
However, if you're new to crocheting and just practicing, I highly recommend using any solid color acrylic yarn that works with a 5mm/H-8 hook size.
Below is the crochet chart for the Lemon Peel Stitch. It's an excellent method for learning to read crochet charts, and understanding written instructions can sometimes be beneficial.
DIRECTIONS
For the Lemon Peel Stitch you start with any odd number of FCH.
Make your SC (How to Crochet Single Crochet) into your 2nd ch from the hook (skipped ch 1 is only a turning ch). Into the next st make DC (How to Crochet Double Crochet). Keep alternating SC and DC until the end of the row. Your last st should be DC. Ch 1. Turn.
From now on you always start your row with SC and end the row with DC. Basically you always work the opposite st from the previous row (Into the SC from previous row you make DC, into the DC from previous row you make SC). Always make ch 1 at the end of the row as a turning ch.
