If you love crochet stitches with rich texture and a bit of elegance, the Alpine Stitch is a must-learn! This stitch has a stunning raised design that adds depth to any project, making it perfect for boho-style blankets, scarves, and home decor. I personally adore this stitch because it creates a soft yet structured fabric that looks incredible in both neutral tones and vibrant colors.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of crocheting the Alpine Stitch, with helpful tips to make it easy—even if you're a beginner!

Recommended Materials

In this tutorial, I use LionBrand Cotton24/7 cotton yarn. I find that the texture stands out more with cotton yarn, and its bright colors are beneficial during tutorials. For this yarn I use a 4mm/G-6 crochet hook.

However, if you're new to crocheting and just practicing, I highly recommend using any solid color acrylic yarn that works with a 5mm/H-8 hook size.

Directions

  • For the Alpine Stitch, it doesn't technically matter whether you start with an odd or even number of FCH. However, if you're following a specific pattern, be sure to adhere to its instructions.

  • ROW 1 - Start with DC row (feel free to visit this blog post where I explain How to Crochet DC). At the end of the row, ch 1 and turn.

  • ROW 2 - Make SC in each st until the end of the row. At the end ch 2 (counts as a first st of the next row) and turn (for the tutorial How to Single Crochet visit this link).

  • ROW 3 - YO and insert the hook around the second double crochet from the first row (the double crochet should be in front of your hook, as shown in the picture below). YO and then finish the stitch as regular DC as you know.

  • Next, make your usual DC into the next stitch of the previous SC row, as indicated by the arrow.

  • Keep alternating between FPDC from the DC row and regular DC from the SC row. The yellow arrows show where to work your FPDC, and the green arrows show where to work your regular DC. At the end of ROW 3, your final stitch will be FPDC. At the end of the row, ch 1 (does NOT count as a first stitch for the next row) and turn.

  • ROW 4 - SC in each stitch until you reach the end of the row. Chain 2 (this counts as the first stitch for the next row) and turn your work. Essentially, every even-numbered row is always a SC row, while every odd-numbered row consists of FPDC and DC.

  • ROW 5 - Start with a regular DC in the next stitch, as from this point forward, you'll always work your FPDC around the regular DC from the previous row and the regular DC into the SC row. In this row, you'll notice that there are 2 regular DCs side by side, as shown in the picture below. Don't worry; this will be corrected once you finish ROW 7. Your last stitch should be regular DC. Ch 1 and turn.

  • ROW 6 - SC in each stitch until the end of the row. Ch 2 (counts as first st for the next row) and turn.

  • ROW 7 -

    • In this row, begin with a FPDC around the second regular DC from the previous row as shown in the picture. Then, continue by alternating regular DC in the single crochet row and FPDC around the regular DC from the previous row.

Tip: To avoid having two regular DC side by side, ensure that your final row begins with FPDC when working on a project using this stitch.
